Conservative Inlays and Onlays Repair Compromised Molars
Larger than dental fillings, but smaller than crowns, inlays and onlays can be an effective restorative treatment for moderately damaged teeth. Inlays can repair damage that does not extend beyond the cusps. Onlays can repair and one or more of the cusps and any damage extending down the sides of the tooth. Located in Wayland, MA, Dr. Barry Bessler is a well-regarded prosthodontist, and he offers treatment in a friendly, relaxed environment. Further, at Bessler & Kang, DMD, Prosthodontists, we partner with a high-quality lab where the ceramists use the latest dental materials. Therefore, your inlay or onlay can be a precise match to the shape and color of your tooth.
What Are Inlays and Onlays?
Inlays and onlays are often referred to as “partial crowns.” They serve many of the same functions, but are generally much smaller. These restorations repair damage on the flat portions of molars. An inlay or onlay can also repair a cracked molar.
Placing Inlays and Onlays
Dr. Bessler works very carefully when designing and placing crowns. First, he will need to reshape your tooth by removing any decayed or damaged tissue. He will also create more room for the restoration so that it will sit flush against your tooth. Then he or a member of our team will take impressions of your teeth and gums and send them to our partner lab to create a stunningly realistic restoration.
The lab will create your inlay or only so that it matches the natural shape and contours of your tooth. Although these restorations can be made from metal, our partner facility typically uses porcelain. This material has a natural color as well as a realistic sparkle. When the lab is finished, Dr. Bessler will check the fit and attach the inlay or onlay using dental composite.
The Benefits of Inlays and Onlays
Dr. Bessler is a conservative prosthodontist. He always recommends treatments that will preserve as much of your teeth as possible. For this reason, he frequently recommends inlays and onlays. Because these restorations are so much smaller than crowns, he does not need to remove as much tissue before placing them. Not only could your procedure be faster and more comfortable, your restoration can also be more durable, and your tooth will be stronger over the long term. Plus, in many cases, inlays and onlays fit more securely than fillings, and they pose less risk of leakage and infection.
There are further benefits to receiving treatment at Bessler & Kang, DMD, Prosthodontists. Dr. Bessler focuses exclusively on restorative care. He teaches other dentists about the latest restorative techniques and the most effective ways to achieve realistic results. With this experience and his commitment to artistry, he can ensure stunning restorations that will blend in seamlessly with your smile. Equally important, he can make sure that your inlay or onlay does not alter the natural force of your bite.
