Periodontal Treatment Can Ensure Your Smile's Healthy Foundation
Prosthodontist Dr. Barry Bessler believes strongly that a healthy, beautiful smile begins with a solid foundation. In order to be eligible for any type of restoration, whether you need a dental crown or are interested in porcelain veneers, you first must have good periodontal health. Periodontal treatment refers to procedures designed to combat the effects of gum disease, ranging from mild to more advanced cases. Dr. Bessler serves patients in the Wellesley, MA, and Weston, MA, areas. If the team at Bessler & Kang, DMD Prosthodontists is unable to meet your needs on-site, we can refer you to a trusted local periodontist or another type of specialist.
Periodontal treatments range from conservative to more invasive. During a consultation, Dr. Bessler will discuss the current state of your gum health and the options available to you.
Scaling and Root Planing
Also known as a deep cleaning, scaling and root planing is the next line of defense if a regular professional cleaning cannot sufficiently restore your gum health. This non-surgical procedure consists of two steps:1. First, plaque and tartar will be removed from both above and below the gum line. This buildup can irritate soft tissue and left untreated, the harmful bacteria will continue to multiply.2. Next, a special instrument will be used to smooth rough areas on your dental roots. By reshaping areas that attract bacteria, planing minimizes your risk of reinfection. Your practitioner may also apply an antimicrobial agent in combination with this procedure. Most patients undergo a deep cleaning spread out over two to four appointments.
Surgical Procedures
Surgical intervention is often necessary to adequately address the effects of gum disease. Once any diseased areas are removed, soft tissue grafts can be used to cover areas affected by recession. Common procedures include pocket reduction surgery and flap surgery, which uses the patient's own tissue to restore a healthy smile.
